Everyone has been told to think outside the box in many different situations, but what’s the really meaning of it? Thinking outside the box is a metaphor that means to think differently, unconventionally, or from a new perspective; i. e., to have a ‘creative thinking’1.
This phrase has become a cliché, but it is widely used in many areas, business environments for example. However, it refers to try not thinking of the obvious things, but that is not enough. People should forget this metaphor and start creating new boxes! A “box” is a belief, or other mental model you use to interpret the world. What you have to do is to constantly question your current boxes and replace them with new ones. In an ever-changing environment, no idea is good forever!
1 Having a fresh perspective that lead to unorthodox thoughts and solutions.
